Mercury Is Going Retrograde on 24 October
October was already busy. Venus has been retrograde since the 3rd, Diwali shopping is in full swing, and your family group has sent at least three messages about wedding dates. Now add one more line to the calendar: Mercury turns retrograde on 24 October and stays that way till 13 November.
Three weeks, entirely in Scorpio, right across Diwali week. Sounds like a lot — but it’s workable once you know what’s going on.
What’s Really Happening Up There
Mercury doesn’t truly reverse course. It’s an optical illusion: Earth laps Mercury in its orbit, and from our vantage point the faster planet appears to slow, stop, and drift backwards. The backward drift is real astronomy; what it does to your WhatsApp messages is astrology.
In Vedic terms, this is Budha — the prince of the planetary cabinet — moving vakri (retrograde). Budha rules intelligence, speech, commerce, travel, and all things mechanical. He governs Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo), is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces. When Budha goes vakri, the departments under him — emails, negotiations, phones, vehicles, paperwork — run on low battery.
Two things make this round notable: it happens entirely in Vrishchika (Scorpio), a sign that drags old conversations back to the surface — and Venus is retrograde till 13 November too. Two personal planets walking backwards means miscommunication is genuinely more likely; I covered the Venus side in this Venus retrograde post.
The Do’s: What Actually Helps
Retrograde season rewards going back, not going forward: review, revisit, repair, rewrite.
- Double-check before you send. One minute of re-reading an email or payment screenshot saves three days of untangling.
- Back up your phone and laptop before 24 October. Photos, contacts, the Diwali card list — just do it.
- Finish pending work. The stalled loan file, the half-written proposal. Retrograde Budha is the universe’s “reply to draft” button.
- Reconnect with old contacts. Diwali wishes to people you haven’t spoken to in years? People are unusually happy to hear from you now.
- Travel with padding. Still fly for Diwali — just reach earlier and keep PNR screenshots handy.
The Don’ts: What to Postpone if You Can
My honest take: most of the fear around Mercury retrograde is overdone. But classical guidance says don’t start big things in Budha’s departments while he’s vakri — practical enough to follow when you have the choice.
- Don’t sign big contracts or launch businesses between 24 October and 13 November if avoidable. If you must sign, read every line twice. For a generally safe daily slot, check the Abhijit Muhurat window alongside the Choghadiya chart for your city.
- Don’t impulse-buy gadgets. Diwali sales are designed to make you hurry — and hurry is what this transit punishes. Check return policies and warranties carefully.
- Don’t send the angry message tonight. Scorpio-flavoured retrograde turns small clarifications into big arguments. Write it, sleep on it, send it in the morning.
- Don’t believe every forward. Budha vakri is peak season for fake news. Verify before you forward.
Also worth knowing: Mercury’s been in pre-shadow since 4 October and won’t fully clear the post-shadow till about 30 November — so treat all of late October and November as double-check season. The Graha Gochar guide has the full planetary picture for the season.
The Classic Budha Remedies (Wednesday Special)
The classic Budha remedies are simple, cheap, and pleasant — no pandit required.
- Keep Wednesdays green. Eat green — moong dal khichdi, palak, vegetables. Donate green moong or green cloth.
- Donate books or study material to students. Budha rules knowledge and students; notebooks and pens given on a Wednesday are the classic remedy.
- Chant Budha’s beej mantra. “Om Budhaya Namah”, 108 times on Wednesday morning. You’ll find it in the Vedic mantra collection, and the Navagraha stotras in our Sanatan Shastra library if you want the full hymn.
- Feed cows green fodder, and look after your younger siblings — traditionally one of the most effective Budha remedies.
The emerald (panna), worn on the little finger, is Budha’s gemstone — but don’t buy one on a WhatsApp astrologer’s say-so mid-retrograde. Get an experienced jyotishi to check your chart first.
