Devotee offering water arghya to the rising sun from a copper vessel at dawn

What Surya Actually Rules in Your Kundli

Before reaching for remedies, know what you are trying to fix. In Vedic astrology, Surya — the Sun — signifies your atma (the self), confidence, your father, authority figures, government work, and your eyes. He owns Simha (Leo), is exalted in Mesh (Aries), and debilitated in Tula (Libra). Sunday is his day, Ravivar.

A strong Sun gives a natural quiet authority. A weak or afflicted one brings the usual complaints: shaky self-belief, friction with the father or bosses, and a career that stalls at the last step. The remedies below are the traditional Sunday toolkit for exactly that. Pick two or three you can sustain — consistency beats intensity.

Not sure how strong your Sun is? Check your free Janam Kundli: a Sun in the 1st, 9th, or 10th house, or in Aries or Leo, is usually doing fine already.

Sunday Arghya: The Simplest Remedy of All

The oldest and cheapest Surya remedy needs no priest: offering water (arghya) to the rising sun from a copper vessel. Fill a tambe ka lota, face the rising sun, and pour a steady stream toward it while chanting the Surya beej mantra or the Gayatri Mantra — itself addressed to Savitar, the solar deity of Rig Veda 3.62.10.

Practical notes: use a clean copper vessel (some texts insist on copper only; others allow brass) and pour one smooth stream within an hour or so of sunrise. Check your local sunrise on today’s Panchang rather than guessing. Many who do it daily say the biggest change is not astrological at all — it forces you to start the day standing still and breathing.

Surya Namaskar: 12 Steps, 12 Names

Surya Namaskar is both exercise and prayer: 12 steps, each paired with one of the Sun’s 12 names — Mitra, Ravi, Surya, Bhanu, Khaga, Pushan, Hiranyagarbha, Maricha, Aditya, Savitra, Arka, Bhaskara. (A few sources note some positions repeat asanas, so “12 steps” is the accurate phrasing.)

Even 3–4 rounds on a Sunday morning count — the tradition treats it as a moving arghya, the same salutation made with the body. Pandits also prescribe it to students and job-seekers before interviews: Surya rules authority figures, and nothing beats walking in calm instead of desperate.

Aditya Hridaya Stotra and the Surya Mantras

When a strong remedy is needed — a father’s health, a court case, a make-or-break career year — the heavy artillery is the Aditya Hridaya Stotra, from the Yuddha Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayana: sage Agastya taught it to Rama on the battlefield itself, before his final fight with Ravana. (Sources differ slightly on the verse count, so honest priests never quote one.) The tradition is to recite it at sunrise, especially on Sundays.

For daily practice, the standard is the Surya beej mantra “Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah”, chanted 108 times on a Sunday morning with a mala. Our Vedic mantra collection carries the standard versions, and the full Aditya Hridaya in Sanskrit sits in the Sanatan Shastra library.

Sunday Daan, Ruby, and the Honest Caveats

Sunday daan for Surya is beautifully simple and cheap: wheat, jaggery, red cloth or red flowers, and copper items, given before noon. The Lal Kitab-flavoured version adds feeding a cow wheat-and-jaggery balls on Sunday morning. Equally prescribed — and free — is serving your own father. Surya is the pita karaka, and no mantra covers disrespect at home.

Then the ruby question. Manik is Surya’s stone — gold, right-hand ring finger, at sunrise on a Sunday. But every reputable astrologer repeats the caveat: ruby is not for everyone. If your Sun is a functional malefic, it can amplify ego, aggression, and clashes with authority. Our birthstone finder shows which stone your chart favours — but do not buy a ruby without a proper consultation. Same for drinking water kept overnight in a copper lota: a widespread traditional remedy, but treat it as tradition, not medical advice.

One more Sunday practice: the Ravivar upvas — a single simple, salt-free meal on the day (sources differ on before or after sunset, so keep it loose). And for Surya worship on the grandest scale, see how Bihar turns it into a four-day festival — the Chhath Puja 2026 guide covers Nahay Khay to Usha Arghya day by day.

FAQs

Which day is best for Surya remedies?
Sunday (Ravivar). Sunrise on Sunday is the prime slot for arghya, mantras, and a prescribed ruby.

How long before Surya remedies work?
At least 40 days of consistent mantra practice, and a few consecutive Sundays for daan and arghya. There is no instant version.

Can I do arghya if I cannot wake at sunrise?
Yes — offer the water as early as you manage, facing east. Regularity matters more than the exact minute.
