Two tables away, a mother was quietly panicking because an astrologer had told her daughter’s Mars was debilitated. Both were overreacting.

Uchcha (exaltation) and neecha (debilitation) describe how comfortable a planet is in a sign — nothing more. An exalted planet works at its best, like a musician playing an instrument that fits her hands. A debilitated planet is out of its element, like the same musician in a hall with terrible acoustics. The music can still be beautiful; it just takes more effort.

What “exalted” actually means

Every planet has one sign where it is strongest. Within that sign, its strength peaks at one exact degree — the deepest degree of exaltation — and tapers off as it moves away. The deep degrees come from Varahamihira’s Brihat Jataka and have been used the same way for centuries. Here is the full table, identical in every classical source:

Sun — exalted Aries (deepest 10°), debilitated Libra (10°)

Moon — exalted Taurus (deepest 3°), debilitated Scorpio (3°)

Mars — exalted Capricorn (deepest 28°), debilitated Cancer (28°)

Mercury — exalted Virgo (deepest 15°), debilitated Pisces (15°)

Jupiter — exalted Cancer (deepest 5°), debilitated Capricorn (5°)

Venus — exalted Pisces (deepest 27°), debilitated Virgo (27°)

Saturn — exalted Libra (deepest 20°), debilitated Aries (20°)

To see where your own planets sit, generate your free Janam Kundali. If you are new to chart reading, our guide on what Lagna, your ascendant, really means will help you make sense of the houses too.

Debilitation: the exact mirror

Debilitation is always the precise opposite: the sign exactly 180 degrees away from the exaltation sign — the seventh sign from it — at the same degree. The Sun, exalted at 10° Aries, is debilitated at 10° Libra. It is one of the few things in astrology that never varies between schools.

But an exalted planet is not a guarantee of a good life, and a debilitated planet is not a curse. An exalted planet that is combust (too close to the Sun), sitting in a difficult house like the 6th, 8th or 12th, or debilitated in the Navamsa chart can seriously underdeliver. A debilitated planet in a strong house, supported by friendly aspects, or running in a favourable dasha can do perfectly good work. Dignity is one ingredient, not the whole recipe. Check the Navamsa (D9) chart too — a planet that looks weak in the birth chart often shows its real strength there.

Neecha Bhanga: when debilitation gets cancelled

Classical texts are kinder than the fear-mongers. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika describe conditions under which a debilitated planet’s weakness is cancelled — Neecha Bhanga, the “breaking of debilitation”:

The lord of the sign where the planet is debilitated sits in a kendra — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house — from the Lagna or the Moon.

The lord of the planet’s exaltation sign sits in a kendra from the Lagna or the Moon.

The planet exalted in the debilitation sign is itself in a kendra. Mars is debilitated in Cancer, and Jupiter is exalted in Cancer — so Jupiter in a kendra cancels Mars’s debilitation.

The debilitated planet is conjunct or aspected by its dispositor (the lord of its sign) or by the lord of its exaltation sign.

The debilitated planet and the lord of its sign exchange signs — a Parivartana, or mutual exchange.

One condition is generally held to be enough, and more conditions mean a stronger cancellation. A debilitated planet exalted in the Navamsa, or a retrograde debilitated planet, is traditionally said to help too — but those are debated between schools, so treat them as strengthening rather than a full cancellation. And one honest distinction: Neecha Bhanga restores a planet to working order; it does not automatically create a Raja Yoga. That stronger claim needs extra qualifications, like the dispositor and the exaltation lord both sitting in kendras.

Rahu and Ketu: the honest disagreement

Search for Rahu and Ketu’s exaltation signs and you will find three different answers from respectable sources. The most commonly used pairing is Rahu exalted in Taurus and Ketu in Scorpio. A second tradition puts Rahu in Gemini and Ketu in Sagittarius. A third school says the nodes — shadow points with no sign lordship of their own — have no exaltation or debilitation at all. Even AstroSage contradicts itself on this across its own pages. So if an astrologer states a Rahu-Ketu dignity as settled fact, take it as their school’s view, not as scripture. (Their moolatrikona signs — Rahu in Gemini, Ketu in Sagittarius — are a separate concept, sometimes wrongly quoted as exaltation.)

So is a debilitated planet a curse?

No — and this is the point worth carrying home. Debilitation describes sign-fit, not destiny. House, lordship, aspects, Navamsa strength, Shadbala and dasha all decide what actually happens. A debilitated planet in an upachaya house (3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th) often improves through experience, and one that gains strength in the Navamsa tends to get better with time. Phaladeepika itself says a single debilitated planet, if retrograde with bright rays in an auspicious house, can make a person a king’s equal.

My honest opinion? Stop asking “is this planet good or bad?” and start asking “what is this planet being asked to do, and what help does it have?” An exalted Saturn in Libra still has to work through its house and its dasha — and a debilitated Mars in Cancer with a strong Jupiter in a kendra is very much in the game. To see how these dignities interact with the five great yogas, read our guide to Panch Mahapurusha Yoga, and for the day-to-day movement of the planets, the Graha Gochar transit guide is the place to start. For the hymns traditionally prescribed for graha shanti, the Sanatan Shastra library carries the Navagraha Suktam and the planet-wise stotras.

FAQs

Can a chart have more than one exalted planet? Yes — several planets can be exalted at once, and several can be debilitated too. What matters is the whole pattern: houses, aspects, dashas and the Navamsa, not any single planet’s dignity.

Does an exalted planet always give good results? No. An exalted planet that is combust, placed in a dusthana house (6th, 8th, 12th), or weak in the Navamsa can underdeliver badly. Dignity is one factor among many.

What is the difference between exaltation and moolatrikona? Exaltation is the sign of peak strength; moolatrikona is the sign where a planet does its most characteristic work, and own sign is where it is at home. Three different rungs of dignity — exaltation is the highest — and they should not be mixed up.

Exalted and debilitated planets explained: the full uchcha-neecha table with deepest degrees, Neecha Bhanga cancellation rules, and why a debilitated planet is not a curse.

[8

post-530","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-kundli-basics
["GET
