Lord Dattatreya with cow and dogs in forest

Most gods have a proper job description. Brahma creates, Vishnu preserves, Shiva destroys. And then there is Dattatreya — a wandering monk with matted hair, four dogs trailing him and a cow ambling behind. Yet millions call him the Guru of Gurus. His birthday, Datta Jayanti, falls this year on Wednesday, 23 December 2026 — Margashirsha Shukla Purnima. The full-moon tithi runs from 10:47 AM on the 23rd to 6:57 AM on the 24th.

But the real reason to know him is this: he claimed to have 24 gurus, and not one of them was human.

The Boy Who Was Three Gods at Once

The sage Atri and his wife Anasuya were so famed for virtue that the consorts of the Trimurti grew jealous and asked their husbands to test Anasuya. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva arrived at her hut disguised as sadhus and demanded food under an impossible condition. Anasuya calmly sprinkled water on them, turned the three disguised gods into babies, and fed them as a mother would.

When Atri returned, he folded the three infants into a single child with three heads and six arms. The goddesses begged for their husbands back; the Trimurti appeared in their true forms and blessed the couple with a son — Dattatreya. “Datta” means given; “Atreya” means son of Atri.

The 24 Gurus

In the Srimad Bhagavatam, King Yadu asks a wandering avadhuta — whom tradition identifies with Dattatreya — how a man with nothing can look so content. His answer: 24 gurus, all drawn from nature. A few of the lessons:

  • The earth is ploughed and trampled, yet never leaves its course and keeps feeding everyone. From her: patience, and a life devoted to others.
  • The python eats only what walks into its path and is content. From it: stop chasing; take what comes.
  • Pingala, the courtesan, waited half the night for a lover who never came. When she gave up expecting, she slept like a baby. From her: expectation is the thief of peace.
  • The osprey caught a fish and every bird in the sky attacked it — until it dropped the fish, and they left it alone. From it: possessions invite quarrels.
  • The spider spins its web out of itself and draws it back in. From it: the world we experience is projected from within.
  • The child owns nothing and worries about nothing — and is the happiest creature in the house. From it: joy was never in the shopping list.

That is pure Datta: wisdom isn’t locked in ashrams; a willing mind can find a teacher in a dog, a river or a moth. In Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, where he is worshipped most, he is revered as the Adi Guru — the first teacher — and devotees turn to the Sanatan Shastra library for the hymns sung in his honour.

Why He Is Called the Guru of Gurus

His teachings, collected in the Avadhuta Gita read in his temples on this day, are about freedom from the noise of wanting. Sripada Vallabha of Pithapuram and Narasimha Saraswati of Ganagapur are revered as his incarnations.

Even his iconography is a lesson plan. Three heads for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; six hands holding each god’s symbols — rosary and water pot, conch and discus, trident and drum. Four dogs at his feet for the four Vedas, and the cow behind him for Mother Earth, who nourishes all without asking anything back.

How People Mark Datta Jayanti

In the great Datta kshetras — Ganagapur, Pithapuram, Narasoba Wadi and Audumbar — the day starts before dawn with a holy bath, abhishekam of the murti, and bhajans late into the night. At home it is simpler: a fast, yellow flowers and tulsi on the altar, and the chant every Datta devotee knows — “Digambara Digambara, Shripada Vallabha Digambara”.

Some families read the Avadhuta Gita together; others simply give food and alms, remembering the begging bowl he carries. To time your fast and puja, check the full-moon date calendar and the day’s tithi in today’s panchang; the stotra collection has the Sanskrit hymns with easy pronunciation guides.

The simplest way to honour the Guru of Gurus: pick one of his 24 teachers this week and learn from it. Datta Jayanti is a birthday — but really, an invitation to go back to school. The classroom is everywhere.
