First, what the lines actually mean

Every old-market jewellery lane has a shopkeeper dangling a bead: “Original Nepali, ek mukhi, sirf eleven thousand.” Panditji swears by his forty-year-old five-mukhi mala; the internet insists these are just wooden seeds. All three are a little right. “Mukhi” counts the seed’s natural vertical lines — more lines, rarer bead, bigger price. Tradition says the beads formed from Lord Shiva’s tears, which is why every mukhi belongs to a deity in his family.

Mukhis 1 to 7: the ones ordinary people actually wear

1 Mukhi — Shiva; planet Sun. Tradition credits it with sharpening focus and shrinking the ego. It is also the most faked bead in the market, so treat any cheap one as carved until proven otherwise.

2 Mukhi — Ardhanarishwar; Moon. Worn for steadier emotions and fewer fights at home.

3 Mukhi — Agni; Mars. Courage, willpower, and the traditional idea of burning off past mistakes.

4 Mukhi — Brahma; Mercury. The student’s bead: memory, articulation, exam nerves.

5 Mukhi — Kalagni Rudra; Jupiter. The standard mala bead and the one most pandits recommend first. General protection and calm; the safest starting point for beginners.

6 Mukhi — Kartikeya; Venus. Willpower and, traditionally, steadiness in relationships and negotiations.

7 Mukhi — Mahalakshmi; Saturn. Money-flow worries and heavy Saturn periods; the honest tradition says it steadies Saturn’s lessons, not deletes them.

Mukhis 8 to 14: rare, pricey, and buyer-beware territory

8 Mukhi — Ganesha; Rahu. Removes obstacles and clears the mental fog that Rahu periods are famous for.

9 Mukhi — Durga; Ketu. Courage against fear, anxiety, and negativity.

10 Mukhi — Vishnu; all planets. General protection, the classic “evil eye” bead.

11 Mukhi — Hanuman and the Ekadasha Rudras. Strength, victory in contests, fearlessness. Many people pair it with a Tuesday Hanuman Chalisa.

12 Mukhi — Surya (Aditya); Sun. Leadership, vitality, self-confidence.

13 Mukhi — Indra; Venus. Charisma and material success.

14 Mukhi — Hanuman and Shiva; Saturn. Protection, sharper intuition, and the go-to bead during Sade Sati.

Note: some sellers swap the planets of the 8 and 9 mukhi beads. The majority tradition is 8 for Rahu, 9 for Ketu — if a shop disagrees, ask questions before paying.

How to wear one without insulting the tradition

The widely followed method:

  • First wear it on a Monday morning (some traditions say Thursday), after your bath, before eating.
  • Soak it overnight in milk or clean water, then chant Om Namah Shivaya 108 times — or the bead’s beej mantra from the Vedic mantra collection.
  • String it on red or white silk or cotton thread, or cap it in silver, gold, or copper. It should touch the skin; avoid synthetic threads.
  • Wash with water and a soft brush every few months; a drop of mustard or sandalwood oil keeps the bead from cracking. Take it off before sleeping.
  • While wearing it, the tradition asks for a sattvic lifestyle — avoid non-veg and alcohol. This is not superstition; it is the discipline the bead is meant to remind you of.

The honest caveats nobody puts on the price tag

First: no lab-grade proof exists that a seed fixes your Saturn. What a rudraksha does give you is daily discipline — morning mantra, cleaner habits, a reminder to sit still. Worth more than sceptics admit, far less than miracle stories claim.

Second: the market is full of carved fakes, especially one-mukhi and high-mukhi beads. X-ray certification is the only serious proof. No certificate, no purchase — especially above a few hundred rupees.

Third: don’t self-prescribe a rare mukhi from a YouTube video. Check which planet troubles your chart, then use the free rudraksha calculator to match a mukhi. A three-hundred-rupee five-mukhi worn with discipline beats a fifty-thousand-rupee fourteen-mukhi bought in panic.

And if you are weighing beads against stones, read our gemstone guide too — the traditions complement each other. For the planetary side of the remedies, the Navagraha Suktam in our Sanatan Shastra library is worth a listen.
