Pandit studying panchang for wedding muhurat

Why One Date Can Take a Pandit Two Hours

If you have ever watched a panditji hunch over a dog-eared panchang for an hour and finally announce, “Is din baara baje se teen baje tak muhurat hai,” you have seen something both ancient and oddly practical. He was not stalling for chai. He was running a filtering system several layers deep to find a slice of time where the sky cooperates with a couple’s future. Here is how pandits actually do it.

1. The Panchang’s Five Moving Parts

Every date is built from five ingredients, and a pandit checks all five — a date can pass four and fail on the fifth.

  • Tithi (lunar day): best are the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 13th of the waxing fortnight. The “empty” tithis — 4th, 9th, 14th (rikta) — are rejected, along with Amavasya and the dark-half run from the 11th to new moon.
  • Vara (weekday): Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday are favoured; Tuesday is rejected almost universally; Sunday and Saturday are middling.
  • Nakshatra (the Moon’s star): the heart of the whole exercise — details below.
  • Yoga and Karana: the violent yogas (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Vishkambha, Shoola, Ganda, Atiganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Parigha) are thrown out, and so is Bhadra — the half-tithi called Vishti karana.

The classical rulebook most pandits still quote is the Muhurtha tradition (the B. V. Raman lineage) — still the gold standard for this filtering. Our Muhurta Helper runs many of these same checks for any date.

2. The Nakshatra Shortlist — Where Most Dates Die

The wedding nakshatra is the most common reason a good-looking date gets killed. The approved list is short: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati — the fixed and gentle stars linked with lasting unions. Traps remain: the first quarter of Magha and Mula and the last quarter of Revati are rejected.

But here is the part most families never hear. A nakshatra that is generally good must also be good for you two — the tara bal check. The pandit counts from the bride’s and groom’s birth stars to the wedding day’s star, and only certain counts (Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra, Parama Mitra) are considered supportive. A date can be perfect for the universe and wrong for the couple. The Moon must be strong that day too (Chandra bal) — a weak Moon at the wedding hour is a classic reason a date slides by a day.

3. The Calendar Itself Says No for Months at a Time

Before any of the above, the pandit checks whether the calendar door is even open. The good lunar months for weddings are Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha, with Kartika and Margashirsha considered ordinary. Whole stretches are barred: Chaturmas (the monsoon months), Adhika Maas (the intercalary month) — and, this one catches modern families off guard, any period when Venus or Jupiter is asta, too close to the Sun to be visible.

Right now that is not theoretical. Shukra (Venus) goes asta from October 12 to 29, 2026 — which is exactly why classical rules say there are no wedding muhurats in that window at all. Use those weeks for shortlisting dates, getting the kundli milan done properly, and booking the vendor. Eclipses with their sutak period, and Holashtak (the eight days before Holi, observed in North India), are also no-go zones.

4. The Final Layer: Lagna, and an Honest Reality Check

Last comes the lagna — the rising sign at the exact wedding hour. Rule of thumb: a benefic (Jupiter or Venus) in the lagna is ideal, the 7th house (marriage) and 8th house vacant, and the lagna not sitting in the 8th from either natal lagna. Gemini, Virgo and Libra ascendants are classically preferred.

One more layer families add today is the dosha check — Mangal dosh in either chart (screen it with a mangal dosh calculator) and the full guna milan score. These belong before the muhurat search, not during it: first check compatibility, then pick the sky.

And the honest bit: the panchang narrows the field; it does not live your marriage. Families hunting the one perfect date while ignoring that the two people need matching temperament are optimizing the wrong variable. A solid muhurat plus an honest kundli milan is the real combination. Start with our list of auspicious marriage dates as your first filter — then let your pandit do the final sitting.

Quick FAQs

Why is Tuesday avoided for weddings?
Tuesday is Mars’s day — linked with conflict — and the classical texts reject it for marriage almost universally, while Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are favoured.

Can we marry during Chaturmas?
Traditionally no — the four monsoon months are considered the gods’ resting period, and wedding muhurats are suspended. Regional customs vary, so your family pandit’s word matters.

Does Rahu Kaal matter for the wedding itself?
Yes — the daily ~90-minute window is kept clear of the pheras. Check it city-wise with our Rahu Kaal tool.
