The rule in one line
Five proud names keep appearing in old jyotish books: Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasha. Together they are the Panch Mahapurusha Yogas, the five great-person combinations. They are one simple rule, applied five times.
The rule: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn must sit in a kendra house — the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th from the Lagna — in its own sign or its exalted sign. Own sign means at home; exalted means honoured guest, at its strongest. Put that strength in a kendra, a pillar of the chart, and tradition says the person’s defining quality stands out. The Sun and Moon form no such yoga. Some texts also count the kendra from the Moon, but most readers start with the Lagna. Check your own placements first with a free Janam Kundali.
Ruchaka and Bhadra: courage and clarity
Ruchaka Yoga is Mars in Aries or Scorpio (own signs) or Capricorn (exalted) in a kendra. Tradition links it with a strong body, quick decisions and courage under pressure — the person who takes the first difficult step, in sport, uniformed service or business. Its shadow is the same Mars turned blunt or impatient. Strength here needs a steering wheel.
Bhadra Yoga is Mercury in Gemini or Virgo in a kendra. Virgo is both Mercury’s own and exalted sign, so Bhadra carries a double emphasis on sharpness: clear speech, quick learning, writing, teaching, trade and technology. Where Ruchaka charges ahead, Bhadra thinks first. A strong Mars and a troubled Mars differ, so use the Mangal Dosh calculator as a separate check if Mars worries you.
Hamsa and Malavya: wisdom and grace
Hamsa Yoga is Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces (own signs) or Cancer (exalted) in a kendra. It is the teacher’s yoga: learning, fairness, and respect from elders and juniors alike. A Hamsa person is often the one friends call when a decision is genuinely hard — not just clever, but steady enough to stay decent when a shortcut would pay faster.
Malavya Yoga is Venus in Taurus or Libra (own signs) or Pisces (exalted) in a kendra. It is the artist’s yoga: an eye for beauty, a love of music and design, and a charm that makes rooms relax. It often brings creative success and a pleasant married life, but its trap is comfort itself. The same Venus-Lakshmi theme runs through our Karwa Chauth 2026 vrat vidhi guide, where beauty, devotion and family ritual sit side by side.
Sasha: discipline that outlasts everyone
Sasha Yoga, also spelt Shasha, is Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius (own signs) or Libra (exalted) in a kendra. If the other four feel like gifts, Sasha feels like a long apprenticeship: patience, organisation, and authority earned slowly by judges, administrators and builders of institutions. It rarely gives an early headline. What is built carefully tends to last, and respect arrives after the work, not before it. Together: Mars gives drive, Mercury clarity, Jupiter direction, Venus grace, Saturn staying power. A chart may carry one, several or none — and none does not mean a weak chart.
Why the same yoga does not work the same way twice
For full results, tradition sets conditions: the Lagna, the Moon and the yoga planet should be strong and unblemished: not combust (too close to the Sun), not closely joined to or aspected by malefics, and not hemmed in between malefics. A planet can pass the sign-and-house test on paper and still be weakened this way — which is why two people with the same yoga can live very different lives.
Timing and divisional strength matter too. A planet strong in the birth chart but weak in the Navamsa (D9) is like a fine seed in poor soil; check it with the Navamsha (D9) chart calculator. And a yoga shows most clearly when its planet’s dasha is running — for transits and timing, see the Graha Gochar guide. For the classical verses themselves, the Sanatan Shastra library gathers the source texts.
Read these yogas as character notes, not certificates. Ruchaka asks whether you use courage well, Bhadra whether you use clarity kindly, Hamsa whether you stay fair when it costs you, Malavya whether you enjoy beauty without being owned by it, and Sasha whether you keep going when nobody is watching.
FAQs
Can I have more than one? Yes. Each yoga is judged on its own planet, so two yogas point to two strong qualities, not a double guarantee.
Does one guarantee wealth or fame? No. King-like classical language is best read today as strong potential in one area, shaped by afflictions, the Navamsa and the running dasha.
Right sign, but not in a kendra? Then the formal yoga does not form. The kendra placement is part of the definition.
